Conforme estudos realizados por Jeanne Brett, professora de Resolução de Conflitos e Negociações Globais na Kellogg School of Management e diretora do Dispute Resolution Research Center, da Northwestern University, orientais e ocidentais tendem a dar maior valor a diferentes resultados das negociações.
Jeanne, que participou do Fórum HSM Negociação 3.0, durante os dias 23 e 24 de agosto, afirma que os orientais confiam menos em seus parceiros e priorizam os resultados financeiros da negociação. Com base nisso, preferem expor o mínimo possível de seus interesses e negociam indo direto às ofertas, usando a estratégia de fundamentação de suas ideias para tentar persuadir a outra parte.
Já os ocidentais priorizam as relações decorrentes daquela negociação, colocando os ganhos econômicos em segundo plano. Essa postura está diretamente ligada ao fato de que os ocidentais tendem a confiar mais em seus parceiros comerciais.
Isso explica o comportamento baseado em perguntas e respostas na mesa de negociação, permitindo conhecer as necessidades e prioridades do outro grupo, e expondo as suas. Orientais costumam não confiar nessa exposição e temer que sejam enganados.
A forma de ver o negócio também tem suas peculiaridades. Enquanto os orientais tendem a usar o pensamento holístico, com uma visão sobre o todo, os ocidentais costumam enxergar no primeiro plano as prioridades.
Em linhas gerais, esse é o comportamento desses grupos quando negociam dentro de sua própria cultura. Mas Jeanne descobriu com suas pesquisas algumas mudanças quando esses diferentes negociadores se encontram.
De acordo com Jeanne, o comportamento típico ao longo das negociações não muda nos orientais, mas o ocidental tende a tirar melhor proveito da característica deles, percebendo suas necessidades à medida que eles expõem suas ideias e fazendo ofertas também.
“O ocidental vai construindo a sua oferta ao longo do tempo, enquanto coleta informações nas perguntas e respostas. Os asiáticos não fazem isso porque simplesmente não acreditam nas respostas, eles não utilizam isso para construir suas negociações”, explica Jeanne.
